Reading The Culture Map

There are 5 major culture in the surrounding area. The Culture of Two Lives, The Culture of Chains, The Culture of Kingdoms, The Culture of the Order, and The Culture of the Old Lands. There are many sub-cultures in each culture and , but we will only focus on the stereotypical view of each area.

This is the Chains Symbol. It’s represented by the color yellow. The people in this area are a superstitious lot and tend to live in a very oppressive environment. They typical are passive and don’t question authority. Most of them have and prefer to have someone telling them what to do. They like king’s, dukes, or other government. They’re very religious. However, the beliefs do vary. Some worship unseen gods, when other worship strange things that sometimes turn out to be Numenera or dangerous monsters. They’re very wary people and tend to passively avoid those that make there way into towns. They are typical conservative and avoid subject relating to money, sex and other religions. However, some of the braver folks have made there way south to avoid the threat of the blue void.

“Ah, lazy assholes. All they do is party and flap about on the docks. They got no shame, I mean did you know they has whoring houses there!?!? Shameful!”

The Order
“I mean, they believe in something, better than those Old Landers. They make a lot of money, but I think they waste just as much on foolish projects. I mean, some say they have fly machines. Hogwash, i say! If they did, they would send some people to help us with the nuts in the mountains.”

The Kingdom

“Now this is a real good bunch of people. Strong leaders, strong army, and strong people. I mean if you grow up next to the old-landers, I suppose you would have to have those things.”

The Old Lands

“Bunch of metal-wearing savages. I hope they all cross the snow and die. All they do is steal from real, honest people and use it to buy junk.”

This Culture of Kingdoms it is represented by the color red. The are a forward and brutish lot of people. Do to a large and condensed population they often have food shortages and rely on trade with the Old Landers to provide numenera. Which they trade for food with other places. Due to having many cites on the shore. However, they’re often raided by pirates or the Green Anchor. They have a large distrust of numenera and often stick to more primitive ways of doing things. They train hard and are no nonsense when it comes to work. They believe a persons bloodline has much to do with there intelligence, trustworthiness, and ability, this has sprouted a culture infamous for racism; radical and violent in some places.

“Lazy, but they have cheap food, so useful.”

The Order

“Full of junkers and prissy men in dresses. I dare the bastards to bring there dangerous artifacts into my home. I will make them bleed if they ever try to bring there bastard’s religion to my kingdom.”

Chains

“Decent folks, but craven and they let junkers in there towns, but only the shiny ones, some-what better I suppose. They’re not too smart and often lowborn intellect even among their leaders, but they know there place in the world. It is more then you can say from most of the bloody junkers around our borders.”

The Old Lands

“They help us, but be careful. Some are hard workers and honest folk, but others are junker sympathizers and thieves. The snow ones will just out right try to kill and rob you.”

This is the crest of the Order of Truth, also called the Order of Common-men. It’s represented by the color blue. They’re the most technology advanced culture in the word. They live in a hot environment and end to wear loose flowing robes and sandals. They consider a proper way to dress for the civilized man and may look down upon people that choose other fashions. They’re the richest culture in the world and remain so by forging alliances with less advance nations willing to convert to there belief system. They do not believe in a god or higher power, but preach the power of man. They denounce the theory that people are born with merit based on family and that it’s the sweat of a man’s brow that earns him power and respect. They believe the Amber Pope is the hardest working man alive and will lead them to even greater heights. Most of there culture can be summed up in these doctrines.

  1. We must do everything we can to advance man and reach true peace.
  2. Hard work and intellect mean more than any family name.
  3. Numenera are not to be feared, but used to help us advance.
  4. Be open to those of different culture and beliefs.
  5. Adaptability is key for advancement.
  6. Laziness is a great sin.
  7. Stealing is a greater sin
  8. Do not be cruel to the sinful, but help them change there ways.

How they view the other cultures.

Two Live’s

“Are greatest ally and dear friends. They tend to waste a lot of time in the taverns, but when they work they work hard. However, we are wary of there laws that seem to lack real consequence in regard to stealing. I mean look at all the… er…”worn" parts on many of there “citizens”."

Chains

“Decent people with a backwards lifestyle. I do hope that the aid we send them will help them quell the uprising. I hate to see all these refugee lose there homes and be forced south.”

The Kingdom

“Brute, savage, backwater people. According to our numbers, they have a abysmally low life expectancy and a massive debt to the city of bridges. It will not be too much longer before they fall and come knocking for handouts.”

The Old Lands

“Oh my, I mean they live a simple life and seem to like it that way. However, most of them are said to be quite violent. I am glad they live farther south.”

This is the culture of Two Lives. It’s represented by the color green. They are a work hard, play hard kind of people. They mostly make there livings on the ocean and are very laid back and carefree. They have no real enemies, a deep love for drinks and whores. They take things one day at a time, work fast and party loud. However, they tend to have a somewhat misogynistic culture, believe women belong in the home. However, to the outsider, the woman tend to be as rowdy and loud as the men.

How they view the other cultures.

The Order

“They are strong and they keep any real threat from befalling us. They are a bit prissy, but live decently, even if they do try to push that lifestyle on you a bit. However, I don’t understand why the expect us to boycott the Junk King and not help us with those Green Anchor fellows.”

Chains

“God’s no! I mean they outlaw whorin’. I just don’t understand um”

The Kingdom

“They’re asshole, but they got whores, if not much else and according to rumors they don’t have much else. Ha Ha Ha.”

The Old Lands

“If they’re as crazy as the rumors say, they would fit in well at the City of Bridges Lowports. Ha Ha Ha”

This is the Old-Landers. It’s represented by the color purple. They vary from area to area. So much so that it is hard to sum up there culture. Some are decent honest folk that just care about fishing, hunting, or farming. Others, called “snow ones” or ’the no-ones", are violent and savage thieves that raid and wreak havoc on border towns.

How they view the other cultures.

There view on most of the other cultures are the same, as many of the out-landers are not even aware of other cultures or even large cities like Qi.

“I don’t mind them as long as they don’t cause me trouble.”
